When you consider that the 1989 Martin Westview Charger football team didn't win their district championship (runner-up to Milan) and lost a total of three games including two to district opponents, you might wonder what made this team so special.
In order to appreciate this team's accomplishments you have to consider these facts.
1- The Charger football team had not had a winning record in the previous four seasons.
2- The head coach was only in his second year.
3- At least three teams in District 13AA had recent play-off experience (Union City, Humboldt, and Milan) and in 1989 only the TOP TWO teams could advance to the tournament.
4- The Chargers had played only two seasons at this level (District 13AA and state play-off eligible)
5- In 1989 NO Westview team had been to a state tournament in ANY sport and you had to go back two decades to find a football team that had accomplished as much as this team did.
6 - The team that eventually ended Westview's run, Brentwood Academy, is a large, private school in Nashville who had won the state championship each of the previous two seasons.
Given these odds, this team deserves to be called, "special." What's more, this team established a tradition of winning that has resulted in multiple play-off appearances for the Chargers over the years since including a 2001 state runner-up.

Thank you David for putting this together. It is amazing how fast time has passed. I have great memories of that season and to all my teammates.
I think what stands out the most of that season was how we all stuck together as a team.

I just ran upon the blog. You did a fantastic job putting this together. I will always cherish that year. All you guys are very special to me and I would love to see all you guys. A reunion in Nashville would be a fantastic get together. I am going in for a bone marrow transplant in April 2018. Say a prayer. Let me hear from you.
